A look at Buckhannon restaurants and bars

The Barnyard
You'll find this place located on Main Street one block east of the court house.  This place is new and will quickly become a Buckhannon gem of the restaurant scene.  Mr. Rylands, of CJ Maggies fame, brings his knack for atmoshpere and good food to a head in this little burgher shop.  The menu includes some helathy vegetable juices in addition to the standard burger and hot dog fare.  Service is fast food style, but quality is far beyond anything that is produced in the chains.  Well done and a great reason to visit downtown Buckhannon.

Aesop's Cafe
Aesop's is located behind The Book Store on E. Main St. in downtown Buckhannon.  The environment is what hits you first here.  In the late afternoon, the sun bursts through the big west facing windows and highlights marvelous woodwork and handcrafted tables and chairs.  Check out the open book that is the entry way between the book store and the restaurant.
You will find the best and most original sandwiches in town here.  The asparagus melt is my favorite.  Aesop's serves wine and beer and on weekends they expand the menu to include dinner entrees such as ribeye with potatos and vegetables and seafood.
Carla, the proprietor, is a master baker and serves up the most scrumptious desserts around.  So, with the gourmet coffee bar, the sunshine and the desserts, I can't imagine how you can leave Aesop's without a Cheshire Cat sized grin on your face.

The Daily Grind
It takes a fresh perspective sometimes to make an old favorite work in an old town.  What genius!  A coffee shop that serves coffee at 6:00 a.m.  Not only that, but the Daily Grind has great sandwiches and desserts as well.  My brother comes in from Salt Lake City pretty frequently and says that the Daily Grind is better than most of the coffee houses in that metropolis.  It is no wonder that, during the Sago mine disaster, many folks from CNN and Fox news were usually found tapping into the free wireless service that this ultra hip coffee house provides.  They do open mic on Fridays and are more than happy to accommodate special events,  The daily Grind is located behind the American Express Financial services Building on Main street, just opposite the corner where Allburghers Appalachian Pub Co. is situated.

Carmona's
Carmona's is located on Rt. 20 South heading toward French Creek.  This is a great place to go for some of the best service and food in town.  Sal is by far the most friendly customer conscious host of any proprietor for miles and miles around.  I wish I had his knack for making everyone feel like a long time friend or member of the family.
An extensive menu with everybody's favorites Mexican dishes is prepared in a clean and comfortable restaurant.  there is a full bar, with really good margaritas.  Their chips are made in house and the salsa is nice and spicy.  Carmon's can seat gigantic parties, and you are always happy and satiated when you leave.  I have a friend who claims that it is the best Mexican food any where.  On the other hand, I have heard Sal himself lament how he favors his native lands authentic flavors, perhaps a bit too authentic for the palettes of the Appalachian diner?

88 Restaurant and Lounge
88 Restaurant and Lounge.  Here you will find the finest dining in Buckhannon.  Located in the Bicentennial Motel at the east end of Main St., the 88 serves made to order dinners.  I like the duck.  Kathleen Laughney is the owner and executive chef.  She learned how to cook in California in some big fancy restaurants and based on my experience, having tried just about everything on the menu, I'd say those Californians really know how to cook good food.  Kathleen does too.  I don't know where she gets it, but the seafood is always really good.  She usually will have a nice subtle Asian flavor to the Tuna, but she likes to mix things up a bit.  So don't go in there and tell them you want Asian tuna if it's no ton the menu.  The iron skillet fried steak is excellent.  Ask for extra seasoning and get a fresh green salad and you'll be pleased.

Ledbetter's Bar and Grill
Ledbetter's is located on S. Kanawha Street in downtown Buckhannon.  The first time I went in there with my buddy Frank, we were both impressed with how much it reminded us of our favorite college bars in our perspective college towns.  The bar is usually pretty clean and they have a good selection of music on their juke box.  there are two or three video lottery machines by the door and a game machine at the bar.  If you like to shoot pool, I think they have one of the best tables in town.  JB and Brandy have taken over management this past month, and have reintroduced food in the evening for those of you who like to have a late night snack with your favorite legal beverage.    There are usually some specials going on; shots, happy hour etc.  It can get pretty loud when the college kids are back  in town, and when they have a band they are usually packed.

CJ Maggies
If you like variety on your menu, then this is the place for you.  The CJ Maggie's in Buckhannon is the original CJ Maggie's.  There is one in Morgantown, Elkins from Mexican, to pasta dishes, and even pizza's and , and Asheville Kentucky, I think.  You can't fail to leave the table with a full belly when you eat here.  They serve everything from Mexican to pasta  to pizza and Strombolis.  these are especially tasty coming out of a wood fired oven.  At the bar you should try their fresh made margaritas.  CJ's can accommodate large dinner parties and they provide full table service.  It is located just down the street from Allburghers Appalachian Pub.

Ole Mill
This is your classic family blue plate special style restaurant.  They serve breakfast all day long and operate buffet style throughout the day.  They have a pub in the back with tvs and a smoking section.  The food is usually pretty good, prepared in mass quantities and the price is right.  The menu selection is wide and varied.  Your best to hit the buffet at the start of each meal hour, ie.e Breakfast at 6 a.m. lunch at noon and dinner at 6 p.m. other wise you run the risk of picking through some less appetizing looking foods.
